CST 349 / 300 Week 4

Part One: Set Your Educational Goals

Educational Goals in CS Program

  • I want to dedicate time to studying and completing coursework for CS courses.
  • I want to learn better studying and test taking skills.
  • I want to learn how to document while appropriately citing resources.
  • I want to learn and retain knowledge from all of the CS courses.
  • I want to earn an A in all of the CS courses.
  • I want to graduate with a Computer Science degree.
  • I want to learn how to network professionally.

Part Two: Set Your Career Goals

Career Goals

  • I want to reassign from my current position into a Project Manager role.
  • I want to completely manage from start to finish a project for the systems that I currently operate.
  • I want to be able to envision future capabilities for my organization as potential projects.
  • I want to increase my salary to its highest potential.

Part Three: Take a wild guess of your percentile of the ETS Computer Science test

After viewing the ETS page, the test description, and sample test, I do not feel confident about taking the test in 18 months. For the next two years my primary focus is on my coursework so I wouldn’t have time to study for the ETS assessment. I wouldn’t feel confident without taking practice tests to study. I believe without the studying, my poor test-taking skills, and not being able to make it a priority and focus there’s no way I would get be able to reach a passing score. My estimation if I had to take the assessment 18 months from now while maintaining grades would be 45%.

Part Four: Keep Up With Your Learning Journal

This week I learned about the ETS Computer Science test which I knew nothing about or that this test even existed. I got to see what a sample test looks like. After getting a preview on the ETS assessment I would be interested in doing more research on what this could be used for and if employer look for this. I also read an article and learned about the seven career goals you need to succeed which are self-assessment, networking, tracking accomplishments, know your worth, update your skills, negotiate, and allow for downtime. I really learned a lot from this article on how to set the goals to succeed. The one that really got my attention where I can do better is knowing my worth. I also learned about personal goal setting and how to set them. Being able to categorize your goals, being specific, and realistic are all very important when setting achievable goals. I also learned about personal mission statements, what it is and why you should have one.

Comments

  1. Hi Linda, your goals are very specific and attainable. You have a clear vision of what you want to achieve throughout your education and the rest of your career. Though our career goals are not the same as I am in an early stage, many of our educational goals are similar; I would also like to do well in my courses and master the skills needed for that, such as studying and retaining material. Overall, the only tip I would have is to include a "how" in your goals as well as a more specific timeframe.

  2. Hey Linda, I like that your goals are laid out to be very specific. You seem like someone who knows exactly what they want with their life, and that will definitely keep you motivated to pursue your goals. One of your goals that really stood out to me is that you want to learn how to network professionally. I think that's a skill that most people don't think about when it comes to expanding their career to opportunities. I'm also on the journey to learning how to network, communicate, and come across to connections as a professional. Good luck!

  3. Hello Linda,

I really respect your honesty about the ETS test and your focus on prioritizing your coursework. Wanting to improve your study skills, test-taking skills, and documentation will help you far beyond just earning A’s. Maybe start practicing small quizzes now to slowly build confidence with test-taking.

Your goal to move into a Project Manager role and fully manage a project shows strong leadership potential. Look for small leadership opportunities in your current role to start building that experience!
